College of Law Repository

Did you know that the Marx Law Library maintains an open scholarship repository? It holds work of our faculty and is the home of our student journals online. There are 491 works posted, and in December there were 3,986 downloads, accessed by 569 institutions in 103 countries.

Freshening Up a Bit!

Beginning Tuesday, January 17th, new carpeting will be installed on the third and fourth floors of the library. The areas getting the new carpet are near the main shelving and the adjacent study tables and carrels. Most of the work will be done in the evening hours. The carpeting project will improve safety, as some of the area is threadbare. We apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused by this much-needed work.

Gearing Up for the New Semester

Welcome back from your holiday break! As this week’s short courses launch, most of you are getting ready for the full class schedule that begins next week. The Marx Law Library and its staff are ready to help you get back in the swing of things!

Learning Opportunities Waiting for Your Participation

Advanced Legal Research further develops the research skills you began to learn in your Lawyering I class. Surveys of attorneys demonstrate that research skills are a key requirement for new associates. Meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 – 2:55 P.M., Advanced Legal Research is taught as a “flipped classroom,” where you will work through individual research assignments on your own and as part of a team, giving you experience in collaborating with your colleagues. Instructors Susan Boland, Ken Hirsh, and Ron Jones are your guides as you explore statutory, case, administrative, and specialized research. Head over to Catalyst right now and add ALR to your spring schedule!

Each week our librarians will offer research training sessions in the library. Pick and choose the sessions that will help you get better insight on understanding and applying research skills and winnowing through the universe of legal information sources that are available to you. Library and Lexis Lunch and Learn sessions will give you more in-depth coverage of Lexis offerings, and provide lunch and Lexis points as well.

Resources to Help You “Hit the Ground Running”

  • Library Research Guides will introduce you to the law library and provide you expert guidance on dozens of subjects.
  • West Academic Study Aids give you 7/24 online access to a variety of popular study aids to your subjects.
  • Video tutorials on several subjects have been prepared by our librarians.
  • CALI lessons can help you review course material and give you another way to learn new information.

The Marx Law Library is your go-to place, whether in person or online, for the information that will help you succeed this semester!

With Apologies to Clement Moore…

‘Twas the week before Christmas,
And all through the stacks,
Not a student was stirring,
‘Twas time to relax.

Exams were completed,
And ready to grade,
While memories of torts,
Were beginning to fade.

You’re invited to write the remaining stanzas. From all of us at the Robert S. Marx Law Library, best wishes for a joyous holiday season!
