Exams move into their second week here, and we in the Marx Law Library welcome the additional hustle and bustle of students busy preparing for exams, or gathering to express relief or commiserate when an exam is finished. For exam study resources, please see our post from a few weeks ago. With the help of donors, we provide food for your body at our coffee house as well as food for your mind!

Holiday Hours and Closings

Evening library hours end this week, and beginning Thursday the Law Library closes at 5:00 P.M. weekdays and is closed on weekends. Also, please take note that this year UC is implementing “Winter Season Days.” The University, including the College of Law, will be closed from December 25th through January 2nd. While business resumes on January 5th, evening hours do not return until January 20th. You can find our complete schedule here!

However you may celebrate this time of year, we wish you a most enjoyable break from your studies!

While students have 24 X 7 access to the Law Library, we truly hope that you take a break for at least some of the long weekend and that you get to spend time relaxing with friends and family. Happy Thanksgiving!

Making a Difference: The Ohio Innocence Project Secures an Exoneration That Was a Long Time Coming

We in the Robert S. Marx Law Library congratulate Ricky Jackson and the team from the Ohio Innocence Project (OIP), led by Mark Godsey, in securing the release of Mr. Jackson and two other individuals after thirty-nine years in prison. The remarkable turn of events was the result of many factors, including an investigative newspaper report, years of hard work by OIP staff and students, and the willingness of prosecutors to seek justice in the end. Events such as these make working at the University of Cincinnati College of Law a joy.

When reviewing your class options for spring semester, please consider these two courses that can help you get ahead of the skills curve.

Advanced Legal Research

In Lawyering I you just scratched the surface of how to find the legal information that you may need to write a memo, complete a project, or prepare for trial. Take a deep dive into legal research with Advanced Legal Research. In this course you will learn comprehensively about research strategies and resources. Susan Boland, Ron Jones, and Ken Hirsh of the Law Library will show you the ins and outs of legal information and help you to become a top-notch researcher. The course regularly earns glowing praise in student evaluations.

Technology in the Law Practice

Like everything else in society, lawyering has been changed by technology. This course will take you beyond your current thinking about how you use computers, tablets, and smartphones in your life as a student and will give you insight into the ethical implications they present to a practicing attorney. You’ll have hands-on practice with a case management system. Shannon Kemen and Ken Hirsh lead the class, which is well-rated in student evaluations.

Tuesday, November 11th is Veterans Day.

We join with others across the nation in honoring those who have served and are now serving in the armed forces of the United States. The date set for Veterans Day, November 11th, also recognizes the de facto end of the First World War with the First Armistice at Compiègne. The war was formally concluded with the Treaty of Versailles.

This Week at the Law Library: Election Edition

Tuesday, November 4th is Election Day.

You’d have to have shut yourself in a cave not to know it, but we nevertheless remind you that Tuesday is Election Day, as provided by law(s); e.g., Federal, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana (No link here, the provision is at Ind. Code § 3-10-2-1.) If you have not already voted under your jurisdiction’s early voting provisions, please do vote on Tuesday. Your voice is as important as anyone else’s, and while the apparent impact of a single vote varies among races, every citizen has a stake in participating in governance.

New Resource for Treaty Research

The Law Library now provides the College of Law access to HeinOnline World Treaty Library! Access includes works identified from Oceana’s Consolidated Treaty Series, Hein’s U.S. Treaty Index, Rohn’s World Treaty Index, Dumont, Wiktor, Martens, the League of Nations, and the United Nations Treaty Series, creating the richest collection of world treaties ever available, covering the time period from 1648 to the present. All together more than 160,000 treaty records have been identified. Also included are hundreds of treaty related publications, a bibliography of select titles of importance to world treaty research, and hundreds of the best, and most-cited law review articles related to treaty research.
