Ch..Ch.. Ch..Changes

Welcome back returning 2L and 3L students. We missed you during the summer, though we admit we do like taking a vacation now and then. (Our vacations do not last the whole summer.) With apologies to David Bowie, here are some changes in the library that you should note.

West Academic Student Study Aid Subscription

Thanks to the subscription we purchased in August, you now have 24/7 online access to a host of West Academic Study Aid resources. These include the Nutshell, Sum & Substance, and Gilbert Summaries series, and many more! Before you can use the sets, you need to register as a new user by logging into the Westlaw lawschool site, selecting the photo above the “Study Aids Subscription” caption, and following the prompts to create your account for the Study Aids. Once you’ve created the account, you can directly login to the Study Aids Subscription site.

Open Reserves

Many of the printed study aids that were kept on reserve behind the circulation desk have been moved into open shelving in the Reference 2 stacks, adjacent to C.J.S.. These materials are now available to you 24/7 for use within the library. Please place the materials on the shelving cart at the front of the stack when you are finished using them. Course reserves will remain behind the circulation desk and will need to be charged out for use in the library.

Change in Weekend Operating Hours

The library will close, i.e., staff will not be present, at 5 P.M. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of each week. Students, staff, and faculty retain 24/7 access to all public areas of the library. The library will continue to close at 10 P.M. on Monday through Thursday.

The Law School Circle of Life

Disney’s “The Lion King” was released in the summer of 1994, when many of the 1L students whom we welcome today were toddling around the house. Its most familiar song, which evokes the film’s theme, is “The Circle of Life,” an apt metaphor not only for our journey through this life, but for a student’s three-year passage through law school. Despite the changes that have occurred and have yet to take place in legal education in the near future, there are rituals that remain in place. This week is a major ritual for both our new students and for us who stand ready to help them through their time with us: First Year Orientation. While we will not literally hold up our new students to present them to the heavens and the assembled herds, as Rafiki does for Simba, we do help our students grow in their knowledge of both the substance of the law and their understanding of professionalism. We in the Marx Law Library are anxious to help you, our new students, in achieving your goals for completing your program here. Welcome, and we look forward to meeting with you!

Stop By for Refreshments Before or After Your Exam!

Last week we gave you tips on how to prepare for exams. This week we’re glad to offer again our coffee break table in the Federal Materials Room of the Marx Law Library. Each weekday morning during exams you’ll find bagels, cream cheese, and hot coffee, and throughout the day there will be other snacks to help you make it until your next meal. We thank our donors and our staff members who make all this possible for you, our terrific students!

Prepare Yourself and Your Computer for Exams

With classes wrapping up this week, we offer some tips so that you and your computer will be ready for smooth and steady performance on final exams.

  • Tips for You
    • Plan your study time realistically: By know you know how quickly you can read and retain what you need to know. Set aside enough time to accomplish what you need to cover in the time it will take you to cover it.
    • Pay attention to your body: Get the nutrition, exercise, and rest you need to maintain your stamina and resistance to “bugs.”
    • Use your support network: If you need moral support, talk to your friends and family, and if you think you might be depressed, talk to a counselor. If you need help finding study materials, look at our research guides or talk to a reference librarian.
  • Tips for Your Computer
    • Check that your computer is in good working order.
    • Pack the power adapter and its cord in the bag with the computer before you leave home for the college.
    • Carefully read through the instructions for using the exam software for spring semester.

We look forward to celebrating the end of the semester, and for our 3L and LL.M. students, the award of your degree, with you soon!
